帝國(guó)理工招聘博士后:氣候變化綜合評(píng)估模型

Job description

Job summary

The Department of Chemical Engineeringis seeking a motivated, erudite and well-spoken engineer or scientist to make a mark on the future of climate change. The post holder will work at the forefront of energy systems modelling, building and applying the analytical tools that underpin the key technology, policy and regulatory decisions that will make or break global efforts to mitigate climate change. They will work with leading thinkers on this crucial topic, within a project that has partners from across the EU and worldwide.

Climate change is a global problem that requires urgent action, and ultimately radical change is the way we produce, transform and consume energy worldwide. To aid in achieving this, decision makers need robust insight into the nature of the technical solutions to stop climate change, along with the policy and regulatory landscape that would support these solutions. This position is designed to provide this evidence via computer modelling of global whole energy system transitions using Imperial College’s novel MUSE integrated assessment agent-based modelling framework. As part of a global team that leads the world in creation and application of such approaches, this is a unique opportunity to influence outcomes and build a career around this crucial topic.

Duties and responsibilities

Your day-to-day responsibilities will be to develop climate change mitigation scenarios, in close conjunction with other research groups in the consortium that will use a range of other integrated assessment models. This will include refining model input assumptions, designing specific scenarios, interpreting results and ensuring they are communicated in a clear, high-impact and policy-relevant manner. You will also be involved in engaging in the wider community of modellers across the world (e.g. via the Integrated Assessment Modelling Consortium).

Specific tasks will include:

  • Understanding and where necessary updating key model input assumptions

  • Updating and running the model to produce a range of scenarios to understand different mitigation pathways and their implications for energy system, land use and other sectoral transitions, as well as mitigation costs and other consequences

  • Interpreting model outputs, by managing large databases of output information, and translating these into clear, insightful analyses to share with other consortium members and a range of non-technical stakeholders from the policy, business and civil society communities

  • Communicating insights authoritatively and with clarity, including writing clear, concise analytical reports, conference papers, and academic journal papers

  • Keeping up to date with the wider research in the area of Paris Agreement mitigation analysis, including the research developed by other large project consortia who are also researching these topics.

Essential requirements

The essential knowledge, skills and experience that you will need are:

  • Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in an area relevant to energy modelling, modelling, or research software development.

  • Have experience in national or global-level energy system or integrated assessment modelling.

  • Have experience of using scientific programming languages (C, C++, Java, R, Python). Ideally, you have experience of professional coding with Python.

  • Have knowledge regarding the nature of climate change, its causes and possible solutions.

  • Have knowledge regarding the principles of numerical modelling applied within a scientific, engineering or economic context.

  • Have excellent analytical and quantitative research skills and familiarity with applying these in the climate science and policy field.

  • Have excellent verbal communication skills, including ability to present work progress to partners.

  • Have proven and clear technical writing and analysis skills.

  • Have a creative approach to problem-solving.

  • Have the ability to plan work towards specified deadlines and deliver on time.
